Debt Can Wreck Your
Marriage
Debt has the power to destroy your marriage. Sometimes couples
involved don’t recognise this fact. Statistics show that the
major cause of marriage break-up is financial matters. People blame
their break-ups and tensions within the home on more obvious
causes, but they don’t realise that one of the underlying
problems resulting in tension and strain is due to mounting bills
and a dwindling bank balance.
It is important to work together on your finances.
Try and prevent the situation where each person is criticising
the spending habits of the other. One person may accuse the other
of being the overspender and this brings guilt and tension, until
they sit down and set out their financial situation. The
overspender often feels belittled and unappreciated by the angry
spouse, and this only serves to make matters worse. The one accused
of being the main “culprit” may become hostile. This
causes tension, resulting in fights and ultimatums within the
marriage.
The resulting marital discord also affects the
children.
